New Leadership Coming to CUNA (Credit Union National Association)

|

On August 27, 2009, Dan Mica, President and CEO of the Credit Union National Association, announced that he will step down from his position in January of 2011.  This is one of the most important leadership positions for the credit union system.  This change will have implications for all credit unions in the years to come.

What kind of leader should the industry be seeking?  What skills, what vision and what experience?

In the press release, Mica reflected on the his relationships with credit unions and the future:

I am a true believer of credit unions and sincerely fond of the people who nurture and lead them.  I have seen how they provide the best deal to consumers—and I am convinced that, in the future, credit unions will become of even greater importance to more and more consumers.

In response to this announcement, Randy Karnes, President and CEO of CU*Answers, emailed Credit Unions Rising his thoughts on what this transition may mean for the credit union industry:

This will be a tough job, only getting tougher in the next few years.  No organization in the industry today is more challenged to change and jump roles than CUNA, and at the same time bring along the tradition and unyielding followers for the ride.

What an exciting time for our business—every cornerstone is at least vibrating with slight disruptions, if not indeed shaking from the stress.  It is time to do something, be part of the vibration, and contribute to new expressions of our long standing and sincere hopes for consumers and professional stakeholders—I hope the next candidate will not only bring visible evolution to CUNA (trades), but influence and set the bar for equally innovative evolution on the other three corners—credit unions themselves, the regulators, and the supporting vested vendor community.

Please share your thoughts on this leadership change:

  1. How will CUNA’s role evolve over time?
  2. What are the most significant issues that Mica’s replacement will have to face?
  3. What are the key qualities the next leader of CUNA should posses?
